Calgary STEAM/Lego Day Camp 2024

Calgary STEAM/FIRST Robotics Camp

Aug 19 to 23, 2024

Calgary STEAM/FIRST Robotics Camp

This camp can involve youth in several age groups.  In partnership with FIRST Alberta, youth will discover more about IndigeSTEAM's robotics clubs, Robot Pow Wows, teams and participating in FIRST Robotics events and competitions. This camp will give IndigeSTEAM and youth and parents an opportunity to see what is possible to keep youth engaged all year.

Grades 1-3 youth (accompanied by a parent or guardian): FIRST Lego League Explore. This level involves building with Lego bricks and adding motors for animations.

Grades 4 - 8 youth: FIRST Lego League Challenge. This level involves building with Lego Technic and a lot of coding to accomplish Lego missions.

Older youth more keen on robotics engineering can work with FIRST Tech Challenge robots.

Grade and program assignments can be based on skills and interests of the youth.

The 2024 Summer Camp begins August 19th to August 23rd. Locations will be determined by the number of applicants.  Most likely locations will be at or near University of Calgary.

We will be exploring FIRST challenges from past seasons and perhaps be some of the first to play with the
2024-2025 season materials that will be released August 1.  We know the season will be about water so we will be exploring cultural aspects of Water along with the STEM.

Maximum 20-30 spots for youth.

YOUTH: Why do you want to come to our camp?

Please let us know why coming to this camp is important to you and what you hope to learn.

Can you provide 250 words or so to tell us?  We may use your ideas for camp content or people to invite to help you learn.

Parents/Guardians: this is for your youth to provide.  Please help them enter their thoughts, but we do want to hear their voice and words here.  Please do not force them to attend.  If they don't want to be here, we have others that do.

Food provided to your youth at our camp is prepared in various ways.  I have read and approve the food policies.

  1. Catered (funded by sponsors with thanks).
  2. Purchased as heat and serve (e.g.: lasagna), served fresh (fruit and veggies), or self-served (breakfast toast or cereal and milk). We follow Goverment of Alberta Public Health Food Regulation policies for storage and heating.
  3. Food prepared by staff (e.g.: BBQ hotdogs and hamburgers).
  4. Food that youth purchase from some host-location venders. [There are vending machines and stores such as Starbucks on some campuses. Youth can bring their own money to purchase food, although we try to discourage a lot of this. We will not provide funds for youth to purchase food. Note that drinks and snacks are provided and readily available throughout the day.]

By Goverment of Alberta Public Health Food Regulation policies, we are required to notifiy you of the possbility that food will be prepared by volunteers in their own homes (#2). Predominantly, this is heat-and-serve food items not directly prepared by us, or fresh salads prepared by staff/volunteers on site. We endeavor to ensure that all food handling and preparation will be compliant with Public Health Food Regulation policies. If you do not agree to let your youth eat food prepared by volunteers, or your child has special diet concerns, we will work with you to provide commercially prepared alternates for these meals or have you support your youth with food you prepare.

As part of IndigeSTEAM's programs, there is a possibility that your child may be photographed, interviewed and/or videotaped by the media. In order to protect your child’s privacy under the Freedom of Information and Protection of Privacy Act, your consent is necessary for involvement in this media coverage. Photographs, interviews, and videos will help us to evaluate the program, promote the program through the media, and let other interested groups know more about IndigeSTEAM and our programs. Additionally, we may use the above in displays, presentations, on our  website, and in written reports.  We endeavor to not share names or locations unless part of a larger and specific article.

If you would like your child to attend  IndigeSTEAM's programs, but NOT to have their image recorded in any way, we will accommodate this wish by identifying your  child to the media people/photographer(s) in a way that will not separate them from the other participants in the program.

Please check off one of the choices below.

NOTE: There may be additional media releases for the host-location or special media projects and these will be shared with you at check in.

Special note re: posting online social media.  Youth are expected to respect the privacy of others.  Please ask if they are OK to share their image on a social media platform.  We ask that all campers refrain from providing tagging information including names and locations.  This will become part of orientation and the youth behaviour contract.

By hitting submit below, you agree that you are the parent or legal guardian of the above-named camper, and are over the age of 18. I certify that my child has my permission to attend camp and participate in all activities.

I hereby voluntarily release, forever discharge the IndigeSTEAM and its host-location, their officers, directors, employees, volunteers and agents from any and all claims, demands, or causes of action, which are connected with my child's participation in the programs or the use of the equipment and facilities.

The information I've given in this form is complete and accurate. By submitting this form, I confirm that I have fully informed myself of the contents of this Parental Consent and Release Form by reading it before I submitting it. I warrant that I possess all the rights, powers, and privileges of a parent or legal guardian necessary to execute this document with binding legal effect.
