On the Land Overnight Camp 2024

This is a new summer camp offering. The location is Heartening Valley Wilderness Retreat north west of Cochrane, Alberta.

Grade 7 - 12 youth will attend a 5-day/4-night overnight Land-based and have a unique inspiring student experience combining Ways of Knowing with STEM and STEAM in a glorious outdoor location.

The camp runs July 15 to 19, 2024. A check in/meeting place will be provided (Calgary) for bussing to the site.

We are currently in the process of putting together the schedule so stay tuned for more exciting details. In the meantime, please be sure to register.

Maximum 20 spots for youth. Once full, we will hold registrations for a wait list.

I authorize the IndigeSTEAM Camp Director, or their designates, in the event of

accident or illness affecting my child, to approve all procedures and related expenses,

including admission to hospital, surgery, anesthesia, injections, or any other

necessary treatment therein, as deemed essential for the care and well-being of my

child. Such action is to be taken only when immediate contact with the undersigned,

or the emergency contact person, cannot be made. I agree that, having taken such

precautions as in your discretion are deemed advisable, IndigeSTEAM Society shall

not be held responsible for any accident or sickness affecting my child attending any

program provided by IndigeSTEAM Society, including this camp.

Food provided to your youth at our camp is prepared in various ways. I have read and approve the food policies.

Catered (funded by sponsors with thanks).
Purchased as heat and serve (e.g.: lasagna), served fresh (fruit and veggies), or self-served (breakfast toast or cereal and milk). We follow Goverment of Alberta Public Health Food Regulation policies for storage and heating.
Food prepared by staff (e.g.: BBQ hotdogs and hamburgers).
Food that youth purchase from some host-location venders. [There are vending machines and stores such as Starbucks on some campuses. Youth can bring their own money to purchase food, although we try to discourage a lot of this. We will not provide funds for youth to purchase food. Note that drinks and snacks are provided and readily available throughout the day.]

By Goverment of Alberta Public Health Food Regulation policies, we are required to notifiy you of the possbility that food will be prepared by volunteers in their own homes (#2). Predominantly, this is heat-and-serve food items not directly prepared by us, or fresh salads prepared by staff/volunteers on site. We endeavor to ensure that all food handling and preparation will be compliant with Public Health Food Regulation policies. If you do not agree to let your youth eat food prepared by volunteers, or your child has special diet concerns, we will work with you to provide commercially prepared alternates for these meals or have you support your youth with food you prepare.

Youth behaviour rules Opt-In

By clicking this box, you have read the behaviour contract below, and agree to it and will discuss it with your child. Youth will be signing their own version at check in.

Campers are expected to conduct themselves in a mature, respectful and cooperative manner while attending IndigeSTEAM Camps. Campers are responsible for their own behavior and conduct. We suggest you cover the materials with your youth ahead of time so they know there are impacts including being dismissed from camp.

Camp rights and responsibilities go hand in hand, so:

Campers have the right to be well-treated, but have the responsibility to treat others well.
The right to be heard, and the responsibility to listen to others.
The right not to be put at risk, and the responsibility not to put others at risk.
The right to privacy and the responsibitily to respect the rights of privacy of others.
The right to be free from verbal, social, or physical intimidation or bullying, and the
responsibility not to intimidate or bully others.
The right not to be discriminated against, and responsibility not to make discriminatory remarks or discriminatory action.
The right to talk to someone if you feel unsafe.

Examples of behavior that will result in a camper being expelled from the program include, but are not limited to:

Consistently and rudely disregarding IndigeSTEAM Camp or host-location rules and policies
Not talking, sulking, leaving, non-participation in or continously disrupting activities. PARENTS/GUARDIANS: It is your responsibility to be sure the youth wants to be in our programs.
Actions, or behaviours resulting in an increased risk to self or others.
Profanity, threats, bullying, harassment, intimidation, abuse or fighting
Vandalizing, stealing, or abusing camp or host-location equipment or surroundings
Being under the influence or in the possession of drugs or alcohol
Possession or use of tobacco or tobacco products
Possession or use of weapons or harmful objects (knives, lighters, matches, fireworks etc.)
Leaving camp premises, or designated activity/sleeping room unless escorted by IndigeSTEAM staff or specific permission is provided. The instances for these will be outlined to campers.
Entering the sleeping area of any other youth for any reason. There are common areas for meeting up.
ALL participants are expected to be in bed and quiet by the designated “lights out” (usually 10:00 p.m. unless otherwise stated). Campers are expected to stay in their designated sleeping areas after curfew or obtain permission as outlined above to leave.

Camp staff reserve the right to determine what apparel is appropriate and what constitutes an acceptable appearance for campers participating in the programming at the Camp (Note: Laboratory Safety Rules require long pants, closed toe shoes, and long hair tied back. See Laboratory Safety Rules.

Pick up if dismissed Opt-In

IndigeSTEAM endeavors to work with youth with some issues of behaviour, but other issues (safety, abusive behaviour) have zero tollerance and the youth will be dismissed from camp. You will be contacted to come and get them.

By checking this box, you have read and understood this section and agree to pick up your youth if they are dismissed from the camp for a serious breach of the above behaviour rules and that this will be without any monetary reimbursement for your travel.

Media Opt-in

As part of IndigeSTEAM's programs, there is a possibility that your child may be photographed, interviewed and/or videotaped by the media. In order to protect your child’s privacy under the Freedom of Information and Protection of Privacy Act, your consent is necessary for involvement in this media coverage. Photographs, interviews, and videos will help us to evaluate the program, promote the program through the media, and let other interested groups know more about IndigeSTEAM and our programs. Additionally, we may use the above in displays, presentations, on our website, and in written reports. We endeavor to not share names or locations unless part of a larger and specific article.

If you would like your child to attend IndigeSTEAM's programs, but NOT to have their image recorded in any way, we will accommodate this wish by identifying your child to the media people/photographer(s) in a way that will not separate them from the other participants in the program.

Special note re: posting online social media. Youth are expected to respect the privacy of others. Please ask if they are OK to share their image on a social media platform. We ask that all campers refrain from providing tagging information including names and locations. This will become part of orientation and the youth behaviour contract.

NO, I do not agree to the above youth to have any media exposure during this camp. I agree they may attend the camp as long as they not photographed or videoed. An interview or survey questions can be asked as long as there is no identification of my youth.
