Mini Tipi Workshop: Mathematics focus
FOCUS: Indigenous Ways of Knowing / Mathematics / Engineering / Design / Art
In the mathematics focus, participants will be working on the making of the tipi skin or canvas and exploring how hides would be used. Includes design depending on duration (Colouring is done post-workshop). Includes history, geography, social studies, symbology and some language use. The mathematics is best described as Applied Math through an Indigenous Lens.
Grade/unit: Mathematics content can be adjusted for age and grade. Please consult with presenter about what topics have been covered and what connections to focus on. Questions are posed for solutions done in post-workshop. Math topics: shapes, circles, measurements, radius/diameter, circumference, area of a circle/semi circle, conical shapes, Pythagorean theorem applied, ratios.
School materials needed: legal size paper, scissors, markers or paints/brushes/water.
Provided materials: tipi paper, templates, hole punches, pencils and string, other demo tipi kit supplies. Outcomes: Physical tipi canvas ready to paint – no poles or other supplies. For learning tipi set up after, see the workshop Combination Math/Eng Workshop below.
DURATION: 1 to 1.5 hour / class
COST: $200.00 presenter + presenter travel outside of Calgary
$150.00 / class for multiple sessions in one location on one day
$10 / kit / youth (Indigenous youth in attendance are free.)
