A Letter from Deanna Burgart

A Message from IndigeSTEAM's Co-President, Deanna Burgart, Indigeneer.

I want to thank all of our hardworking folks at IndigeSTEAM for granting me the space and time needed for healing this past few months. I have just returned and am so excited to learn about ALL the new developments, ideas and pathways forward for IndigeSTEAM.

IndigeSTEAM held its AGM Nov 21, 2022. Information is posted on our website under Events/AGM 2021.  Thank you to IndigeSTEAM's co-president, Jessica Vandenberghe, for her leadership and vision in this space. Thank you to Wendy Hutchins, Founding Board member, Treasurer and overall mentor, empowerment coach and connector for your continued guidance, support and unending faith in this work. Thank you, Rob Cardinal, Director and Founding Board member and Director for Indigenous Connections, Corinne Paul, Secretary, Sheila Norris, Director at Large, Anita Lafferty, Director at Large, Steve Saddleback, Director at Large, Joanne Martineau, Director at Large and Founding member of GAIA; and our staff - Logan Arcilla - Robotics and Tech extraordinaire, Amy-Marie Holland - Herbalist, connector, supply chain specialist and overall program manager and coordinator for our Education Topic Bundles and Brendon Many Bears - Creative coordinator who will be helping to facilitate our workshops, Tipi paint nights and more!

The Education Bundle topics IndigeSTEAM is slated to cover over the next three years are as follows:

• Ourselves (Coordinator – Amy-Marie Holland)

• Animals (slated for 2022)

• Plants (Coordinator – Amy-Marie Holland)

• Land (Coordinator – Brendon Many Bears)

• Our Home in the Skies (Sky/Heavens; Coordinator – Rob Cardinal)

• Water (Coordinator – Alex Zimmer)

Each topic will also have an overarching theme that looks at Energy (Coordinator – Deanna Burgart) and Technology (Coordinator – Logan Arcilla) as these two bundles transcend, include and impact all topics. Guiding principles include the ART of STEM, the STEM of ART; the Indigenous Culture in STEM and the STEM of Indigenous Culture.

We have a conversation underway with Energy Futures Lab about creating a model or a "container" for showing up in brave and ethical spaces that can lead to more Just, Equitable, Diverse, and Inclusive conversations for creating a better future? Join us in the coming months to find out how you can be part of the conversation towards Decolonizing, Indigenizing and Decarbonizing our Future through the creation of Ethical and Brave Spaces in STEAM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts and Mathematics).

If you have an initiative that is seeking to do this as well, and you think IndigeSTEAM can help, we would love to hear about it! Book some time with us for a Coffee Pot chats Monday - Friday from 10 a.m. - 11:00 a.m. MST for a virtual coalition of convening and converging our conversations into the creative space of culturally-safe collaboration. How is that for the 7 Cs? 🙂 Contact us at [email protected] to schedule your topic. We would be happy to extend the invite to your network - or just chat with you.

We would like to co-create spaces with our partners and communities in the spirit of our IndigeSTEAM retreat outcomes from 2019 (contact us if you would like a copy of the report from this retreat):

Outcomes:

Two-Eyed Seeing

Relationship

Time

Community

Join us in co-creating spaces in STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics) through the weaving in of A (Arts, Humanity, Culture, Ethical values (virtues, human rights and social justice)) towards a more empowered future for all.

You may have noted that our logo, created when IndigeSTEAM was formed, lost the logos of GAIA, First Light Initiative and Power to Choose. The first two programs were morphing rapidly, but we didn’t have program names for them. With the naming of Pathways for Choice (see below), Partnership in Community became our third pillar. This diagram is meant to represent the three pillars of programs that make up IndigeSTEAM.

In gratitude and with respect,

Deanna Burgart (she/her)

Co-President, IndigeSTEAM
